Ignorance in disguise!

A writer composes the following thoughts. It was probably John Locke. Tis ambition enough to be employed as an under-laborer in clearing ground a little and removing some of the rubbish that lies in the way of knowledge; which certainly has been very much advanced in the world. If the endeavors of ingenious and industrious men had not been much cumbered with the learned but frivolous use of uncouth, affected or intelligible terms introduced into the sciences, and there made an art of, to that degree the philosophy which is nothing but the true knowledge of things was thought unfit, or incapable to be brought into well-bred company, and polite conversation. Vague and insignificant forms of speech and abuse of language have so long passed for mysteries of science. Hard or misapplied words with little or no meaning, have by prescription, such a right to be mistaken for deep learning and height of speculation, that it will not be easy to persuade, either those who speak or those who hear them, that they are but the covers of ignorance and hindrance of true knowledge. To break in upon the sanctuary of vanity and ignorance will be, I suppose some service to human understanding, though so few are apt to think they deceive or, are deceived in the use of words. Locke further stated that just because it is fashionable to misuse words and their meanings; this fact does not excuse those who do so.
Take the word liberal, for instance. Liberal mean open-minded, broad-minded, tolerant, moderate or freethinker. The Antonym for liberal is narrow-minded. If conservatism is the opposite of liberalism, then conservatism means narrow-minded. How many times have you heard CTR and FNN banner toters (Conservative Talk Radio and Fox News Network) freely tossing around the word liberalism and attaching it to the Democratic Party? How often do you hear them using the word narrow-minded to describe the Republican Party?
Socialism is another word freely tossed around and utilized to describe the Obama administration. People currently living truly socialistic countries are amused when they hear Americans defining socialism. CTR and FNN water boys and girls shamelessly toss the word socialism around and attach it to any program they feel will do what they call, gouge the rich. Interjected into the same conversation is the word individualism. I dare say; most of them do not have a clue where the word came from and what the originator of it was describing.
Although written many years ago, John Locke was describing CTR and FNN when he wrote about the misuse and misapplication of words. His observation that the words given to us for the improvement of knowledge should not be used to darken truth and unsettle peoples rights…if this will happen, it should not be thought learning or knowledge to do so should send a clear message to Conservative Talk Radio, Fox News Network, their listeners and viewers.
