Pretender (Part 2)

(No one has a monopoly on this pretending thing)

Drive by many schools and look at the attire of many of the students. The adults who set the dress code for these schools pretend that students’ dressing like clowns does not influence the tone of the schools and students. Stop for a minute and define the word tone.  Tone means quality, character, manner, tendency, attitude and actions. When will we stop pretending that the way our kids dress is not having a negative impact on their behavior?

Look at how poorly many black children are performing in school. Do you think children in the ninth grade are comfortable being able to only read at a fourth grade level? Do you think these same children are comfortable not being able to perform simple math and write legibly? However, these children, and many of their parents go about their daily lives pretending all is well.  These children pretend that what little they chose to learn will insure them decent jobs and a proper place in society when they graduate. Notice, I said chose to learn.  Much more is offered than many of our children make the effort to learn. These children go through elementary, middle and high school pretending that they are preparing for adulthood.  Parents know when their children are under performing in school. Too often parents put most of the blame squarely on the shoulders of the schools for their children performance-pretending that parents have limited obligations in the education of their children.

Many of our children have serious health problems due in part to poor eating habits and little or no exercise. Diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure are on the rise in young children.  Go to any fast food or buffet restaurant and watch our kids eating their fill of all kind of unhealthy foods. Lack of control by the parent and child is another contributing factor. Parents pretend that they do not know that what and the amount that they and their children are consuming is unhealthy and they do not see their children bulging waistlines.  So, what do we have here? We have another group of great pretenders, pretending that they are doing well.
